Extreme Sports
Competitions
Extreme sports are sports that have a
element of height, speed, and danger. The word extreme makes it
sound more dangerous no matter how mellow the sport is. As in
all sports competitions are made up combining extreme sports to
test the abilities and the skills of the athlete.
These competitions will push even the most in shape person
over the age because the extreme sports athlete is one that
most use balance, strength, agility, and their common sense to
get past some of the obstacles the organizers will put in their
way. They have to overcome the fear of death and injury to be
successful and to win these competitions.
One of these competitions is the X games. Like their Olympic
counterpart there is a summer and a winter competition.
Motocross, skateboarding, and trick bike riding is judged to
award the winners bronze, silver and gold stars. The summer X
games will be held in Los Angeles until 2009 and the winter
games will be held in Aspen, Colorado until 2010. Sometimes the
X games hold an X fest. These festival features bands that are
associated with extreme sports. The contestants come to sign
autographs for their fans and sports venders are there to hawk
their product.
The world has embraced extreme sports as Australia is
hosting their own version of X games called Planet X. Planet X
is organized in primarily in the same way as the X games, but
there are some differences. Trick sky diving and other aerial
events are hosted along the traditional extreme sports of
surfing, snowboarding, and speed boat racing. The Aussies like
to one up their American counterparts by adding more speed,
height, and danger into the sports. Planet X also allows more
international competition that cannot compete in the X
games.
Survivor shows like the Great Race and Primal Quest have
displayed extreme sports as part of the competition. Not only
does the contestant have survived in a harsh environment with
little food. They have to compete in extreme competition that
is wrought with danger and excitement. The lack of proper
nutrition and strength gives these survivals show competitions
a more dangerous look that draws a lot of the younger
audiences. With both extreme sports and reality show mixed, the
producers are sure to bring in a broader viewing from all
different demographics.
The promotion of extreme sports as competitions has
broadened the audience in both television audiences and in
person. The fan base is so big that sporting good companies and
clothing lines have devoted entire lines of products to promote
extreme sports. The companies use the word extreme to say that
their product breaks away from traditional sports and has
cutting edge taste or performance. The extreme sports industry
has become that, an industry. They are taking the sporting
share of programming by storm and adding a little danger and
excitement to otherwise mundane sports. The sports are exciting
to watch and it makes one wonder, are you watching for the
excitement or are you waiting for someone to crash.
